Remember My Name is an activity of the SAIL (Shepherdstown Area Independent Living) group in Shepherdstown, WV.. RMN brings together experienced and novice writers for sessions on topics of interest to the participants.

The point of the sessions is to extend encouragement and assistance in transferring memories, praise, gripes and even imagination from the fuzziness of the mind to the clarity and conciseness of the written word.

The group acts as a collective resource to manage the various ways to publish work, where ‘publishing’ can mean sending a piece to a friend or relative, to submitting it to a newspaper or magazine, to maintaining a personal blog, to getting professionally published.

That said, it is perfectly acceptable just to write for personal pleasure, meaning to an audience of one.

The title of the activity, Remember My Name, is borrowed from a blues song written and sung by Alberta Hunter. She wrote it for a 1978 film of the same name as part of the sound track for the movie. At the time she was 82 years old and was making a comeback from a singing career begun in the 1920’s. So the message here is it’s never too late.
