The Federal government has proposed eliminating the TRIO program, which gives individual encouragement and support to students intent on applying to and succeeding in college. TRIO students don't come from families or communities with a strong history of attending college and can struggle to cope with the new demands of college life. Nevertheless, they do succeed when they get appropriate support. TRIO, in supplying this support, has been especially successful at Shepherd University and its loss will hurt the university and the student body.
